PATRICIA PIATKE- a Berliner Analog Photographer

Interviewed by Medina Shala

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

Hi, Iโ€˜m Patze, a born Berliner working freelance all my life in different fields, as a hairdresser in my own studio, as a hair & makeup artist on set specializing in airbrush technics, and also as an analog photographer here and there. Also Iโ€™m a mother to a 11 month old baby girl and two black cats ๐Ÿ™‚

What motivated you to get into photography?

Honestly the bad results I so often received as a makeup artist, doing test shoots to pimp my portfolio. I was so disappointed about photos that I received, because I had a clear vision on how they will come out. I was not satisfied with the stuff that was sent to me, so I didnโ€™t want to put it on my website. So I thought. Ok. I will have to do it myself to be happy. I saved money for almost 2 years to afford a fancy canon mark II, just to end up shooting film only with shitty old cameras !

Which current art world trends are you following?

Currently none, as a working mama and dreamer is not much time left. Also I keep space for my own fantasy trying not to let too much in to be unconsciously distracted.

Who are your biggest influences?

Photographers from the past, Lindbergh, Newton, Leibowitz, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Avedon, Man Ray, Unwerth etc.ย When it comes to hairdressing Iโ€™m completely influenced by Vidal Sassoon.ย And as a makeup artist I would say by everything and everyone!ย

Whatโ€™s something you witnessed recently that reminded you that life is good?

Seeing my baby girl growing in her first year of life. It changed my life completely. So raw so intense so honest, really hard to explain.

ย

What does your work aim to say?

Love and passion for analog film+ it visualizes my fantasy on how I see women. A natural and loving look. Not just sexualised and objectified. I meet souls instead of men & women and I see the beauty in everyone.

Thank you so much for getting in touch and giving me the opportunity to do this interview. I really appreciate your work and platform.
