Maal of America – a musician from LA

Interviewed by Medina Shala

Tell us about yourself. How did you get into music?

My name is Maal and I’m an artist. I’m from Lawrence, Kansas, I lived in LA and in Florida as well. I got into music when I was a teenager. I was just doing it for fun with my friends, and then, a couple of years later I put together my first mixtape. After that I started doing shows locally in Lawrence, Kansas and in the late 2000s I started uploading youtube videos and then this kept going from there.

How is your personality reflected in your work?

My personality is reflected in my work by the lyrics, because I write my own lyrics. Also by the melodies whichย  are the examples of my spirit in a way, and my subject matters. The diversity in my music I think it’s complex andย  you can find a little bit of everything there.

Whatย do you like to do outside of music that contributes to your musicality ?

I write screenplays, I also direct and edit music videos. This writing process especially helps me to write songs. Directing and actually shooting videos help with my visuals and are a huge help in writing the metaphors of the songs.

Which of your own songs is your favourite?

My favourite songs that I released are “Im gone” and “Too Chill”.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

I can’t say I have a singular greatest accomplishment or anything like that, I think I have a lot of work to do actually.

What advice would you give your younger self ?

Stay in School!
